It is whatever you want it to be! Coaches are available nearly every single day of the week at varying times (1-2 coaches will be assigned to you at first). We serve as sounding boards for your practice speeches, craft lectures/presentations as seen fit, assign “homework,” and tailor drills to your needs. Once you sign up to become an Extempify student, an email will be sent out to you from your coach(es) with a Calendly link. You can meet as regularly with your coach as you would like.
One of the first things we ask of every Extempify student is to send a practice speech recording or prepare a speech prior to our first meeting so we can assess the student’s needs. This is also how we match students to the most appropriate coaches. As an example, if a novice student (never done Extemp before!) were to join Extempify, we would present the outline of an Extemp speech, substructure, address needed delivery components (jokes, emotion, inflections, etc.), and work with them through live-prep/drills before diving into full-length speeches. For intermediate Extempers hoping to boost plain speeches, we will hone in on joke-writing strategies, practice speaking drills, and refine content/delivery. These are just generalizes. Your extemp curriculum will fit your needs.
Nope! Our program is entirely virtual, so you can join from anywhere at any time. For a full disclaimer, a vast majority of our staff is based in CA, so we may not be able to adjust for regional differences that are unique to your state’s circuit. However, having had experience on the state and national level, we understand how to work the national circuit effectively. The strategies employed by Extemp also don’t vary much between states!
We are welcome to students of all skill levels! We just ask that you be completely transparent and descriptive as possible in the sign-up form. Middle school students are allowed to sign up as well.
